Review of Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006) by Radhika N — 09 Apr 2008
A really nice movie. Prior to watching it, I couldn't understand what an imaginary portrait could do that would be better than a real story and why this imaginary story should even be considered Arbus' for that matter.
But it all works out nicely. Her earlier life is portrayed in linear surfaces and geometric designs (luscious NY architecture) and eventually non-linearities and raggedness start seeping in. Robert Downey is magnificent.
To think a man could convey such sensuality. By the time the clothes come off, even his hairiness seems normal. And when even that is shorn, it is as if we are seeing so much luminescent beauty. I suppose this is what Diane Arbus' work was like.
This movie has its disjointedness but the central story is pretty romantic and has a parable-like quality.
