Review of Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006) by Noa M — 16 Jun 2008
This film has its imperfections but nevertheless is a well intended, beautiful and moving effort.
It is a bit of a strange premise to try and make a biopic of a real character but create a fictitious story out of their life, so at times one wonders what bits could have really happened and what bits were completely imaginary.
However Diane Arbus's life seems an interesting enough subject to base a film on. Nicole Kidman does her justice, her performance is quite respectable, nevertheless is Robert Downey Jr. who really saves the day with his very moving portrayal of Lionel, although his acting throughout 90% of the film has to be restricted to his eyes and voice, his last scenes in the film really clinch the deal.
I think it is an underrated film, only because for most people might not be easy to digest, it is a bit of an acquired taste and just like Arbus's work, to really feel it and appreciate it, you need an open mind and a thirst for the unknown.
I do recommend it!
