Review of Funny People (2009) by Anna B — 16 Aug 2011
As usual with Apatow, the script is juvenile and underdeveloped. Unfortunately, what usually saves him, the extended improv, is lacking. Instead of letting scenes play out naturally, he imposes the plot upon them very heavily, and it weighs the whole film down.
The whole thing with Lesley Mann is unnecessary, he should have focused on Rogen and Plaza's romance and involved the comedy club more significantly. He clearly wanted to make a serious-funny movie, and it is pretty funny at times, but the drama is handled poorly.
