Review of Funny Girl (1968) by Ericka J — 22 Oct 2010
Ladies and Gentlemen this film is iconic for a reason. Let me just start by saying that this is the real chick-flick. Streisand plays a character who is ambitious, talented, driven and doesn't succumb to the "damsel-in-distress" cliche of women in modern day films.
Streisand shows that women who are driven can accomplish anything - success on broadway, a marriage, children, wealth, and beauty. Beauty seems to be a reoccuring motif in the film - Streisand consistently refers to herself as "not beautiful" however because she knows how she is viewed by the world she turns it around and makes it into a joke.
That's where her real beauty comes from. The fact that she can laugh at her imperfections. Now the real depth of the movie comes from her relationship with Sharif. It's complex, dirty, dilusional and down right romantic.
However, the most amazing part of the film (outside of the plot and the incredible acting) is the music. Ohhhh, the music. Streisand's voice is so beautiful. She really is a high standard that all girls who dream to become Broadway stars must try to reach.
So Gentlemen, when asked what chick-flick you would want to watch by your girlfriend/date I would suggest Funny Girl. Because then at least you'd get to laugh, listen to some amazing music and well get laid at the same time.
Because this movie would put your girl in the mood. :).
