Review of Funny Games (1997) by Mark E — 10 Apr 2008
This movie is amazing. Long single shots, clever camera angles, great dialogue and lack of soundtrack lend it a very realistic quality...until Paul turns to the camera and winks at the viewers. These little trysts into reality or 'breaking the fourth wall' didn't give me the impression that it seemed to give other viewers.
I didn't feel at all like Paul was including me in his love for violence or calling me out on mine. The fact that HE seemed to be enjoying it only disturbed me more. And the 'rewind' secne only gave me a sense of his control issues and mental instability.
Maybe that was all in his head, a possibilty he foresaw and he corrected it. I could be wrong, but that's what I got from it, and I really enjoyed this movie, it was brilliant.
