This is a very disturbing film that stays in the mind long after viewing as its all too believable. The plot is very simple, a family; mum, dad, son and dog staying in their holiday home at the lake, get visited by two polite young men who want to borrow some eggs for their neighbour.

The family are then submitted to a day of violence and torture. The violence is never shown, which adds to its impact. It's difficult to write more without giving away the plot, but the way Haneke has one of the torturers talk through the camere and make you the viewer complicit in the crime is very clever and there is a scene near the end where Haneke plays with normal film conventions had me reaching for the remote as I thought something had gone wrong with the film.

Overall this is well made, thought provoking and disturbing film that is not easy to recommend.
