Review of Funny Games (1997) by Loris R — 06 Dec 2010
Only one part was highly disturbing, mainly because you don't see that type of violence in films, but the rest of the pseudo film (lecture) is dreadfully boring and fucking annoying. It's out of line to what Haneke usually commits himself to.
Sure his pieces are meant to challenge, provoke, and anger, but in his other films his artistic touch is cinematic and provides some entertaining shock value; this film is the exact opposite and absolutely nothing is gained, although the acting and directing are remarkable and perfect.
You're shoved into a self righteous person's dogma and it's demeaning. It's insulting moreso because I saw it with intentions on completing Haneke's filmography, and was instead accused of society's inherent violent side and wrongdoings.
Confused on how to rate it the first time around, I am now firm in my criticism of this "film". You'd think Haneke had matured since '97, but the fucker comes out with a crummy remake.
Douche.
