Review of Fun and Fancy Free (1947) by Gabo T — 18 Aug 2008
Jiminy Cricket introduces two different stories Bongo and Beanstalk, this is the only film featuring all four of Disney's most famous characters Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Jiminy Cricket. The first story Bongo is about a bear who lives at the circus a longs to be wild again. One night he manages to break the train door and escape into the woods. At first the woods are fun, and then they become a little scary but finally Bongo finds true love. Then we head onto the second story which is told by some really creepy man, who has two ventriloquist dummies which frightened me! Anyhow he tells the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, told the Disney way of course. A harp from happy valley has been stolen, the farmers crops fail and everyone is hungry. The cow is not producing milk so they trade it for beans, and well you know the rest of the story.
Fun and Fancy Free? Well I didn't find it all that fun, I found it very dull. The second story with Mickey (played by Walt for the very last time) is much better than Bongo, but the man telling it disturbs me a lot. This film is only worth watching for the second film and it's a shame that Bongo let's it down.
