Review of Full Metal Jacket (1987) by Bütch T — 05 Aug 2013
The structure is puzzling. Each third of the movie is a different mood, mindset, and setting, translated to the viewer from Private Joker's memoirs. It makes sense, seen a second time- the brutality and structure of part 1 burns into Joker's memory.
The chaos and boredom of part 2 slips away to just slivers of intangible moments. Finally the third act returns to surreal intensity and a single moment occupies a vast amount of Joker's mind. It's brilliant, but the final moments of Joker's transformation were emotionally ambivalent.
What other feeling would there be? Our protagonist has moved beyond fear, somewhere most individuals have never been.
