Review of Full Metal Jacket (1987) by Emerson B — 10 Feb 2014
As Kubrick made his way toward the 90's, it became clear that he was attempting to alternate between genres of source material. Full Metal Jacket proves this maneuver successful. Kubrick's ability to blend moods, specifically within the first 40 minutes, is at an all time high, presenting to us some hilarious yet intense drill instructing from the one and only R.
Lee Ermey. On a deeper level, it illustrates the complete deterioration of the troops in the Marine corps to the point of losing their last remaining shreds of humanity, leaving them lifeless, killer husks.
This is displayed by Kubrick in his signature intensity and terror that no other horror flick can bring to the script and screen.
