Review of Frozen River (2008) by Campbell K — 24 Feb 2009
Mixed feelings for the most part; the parts that I enjoyed were very well crafted, and the other parts were very ho hum. it has that multi-racial melodrama that screams oscar nom. it's an extremely ambitious first feature and the director, courtney hunt, shows promise.
once her vision is a little more succinct, I could see myself liking her films a little more. this felt like it should have remained a 15 minute short (like the original) and could have benefitted from a few more casting choices.
melissa leo was fantastic, and I agree that her performance was oscar worthy.
