Review of Frozen River (2008) by Randy P — 02 May 2009
A well-deserved Oscar nod came the way of Melissa Leo for this devastatingly real performance. The movie itself is good, with a believable story, and real characters with real motives and real emotions - something you don't always find these days.
The story is simple: a woman in small-town upstate NY needs money for a new double-wide and turns to smuggling illegal immigrants across the Canadian border via a Mohawk Indian reservation. Which, now that I've typed it, seems ridiculous, but below the surface it's simply about a mother doing whatever it takes to provide for her kids.
It's a touching story, and engaging, and certainly worth a look. A successful piece of indie cinema.
