A courageous indie. The cast unearths a callous realism, which is to be expected from social drama such as this. However, the air tight script goes deeper by drastically raising the stakes at every turn.
The plot climbs into a sometimes unbearable suspense, recedes, then climbs again. Melissa Leo is stunning, and the distilled, sorrowful performance of Misty Upham is acutely original. Suspenseful and deep, Frozen River is a artistically drawn tale of desperation for our financially weary time.
