Review of Frozen River (2008) by Andrew K — 04 Feb 2010
Easily one of the better films of last year (discovering there are a few) with Melissa Leo giving one of the closest portrayals of struggling mother trying to support her two kids after her husband makes a run that I have seen.
There is no glamor and she isn't always smart in her decisions and that type of realism is sometimes missing from films with a low class female protagonist. The smuggling of immigrants across the border is a welcome change from could the usual story that comes along with the struggling single mother story line.
