Review of Frozen (2013) by Jake M — 25 Feb 2017

Frozen (2013) - Might be a little overrated in some areas, but it still remains as one of the biggest animated films of the decade. It is true that this film gets way too much talk and I admit that I don't adore this film as much as Disney's Previous Princess films.

Even with that said, I still think that this is a solid movie and the moments that are great are really great. The story is cute but it's not afraid to go intense sometimes. I do like how this film wants to change things up a bit with some unexpected twists and turns.

The climax of the film was probably the most intense and twisted moment in the entire film it had me on the edge of my seat and admittedly it did make me shed a tear or two. However I do think that the First act, While still well done, is kinda rushed and I feel like it could have been slower.

The characters are memorable and mostly lovable. Anna is dorky but also determined. I do feel sad for her past and I wanted to see her reunite with her sister. I did think that sometimes her dorkiness can get a little old but at least they know when to use it and when not to.

Elsa is a character that I really wanted more of. I felt like I needed more time with her because I love how they set her up and how she is able to use her Ice powers. We do get all of that stuff, but I really would have loved to see her go through more development.

Kristoff is snarky but reasonable. He works off of Anna decently and although their chemistry is rushed I do accept the fact that they do come to like each other over time. The side characters are adorable especially Olaf and they steal the show in a lot of scenes but not to much to distract from what's going on.

The animation is amazing to look at and I can tell that the animators put in there all to get even the little details right. I've seen snow in animated movies before but never to this extent. I also love the animation of when Elsa does her Ice Powers especially when it comes to the "Let it go" sequence.

The animation in Arendal is also impressive and I love the color palate they use. I also like how the movie is set in Norway and they take advantage of that fact by incorporating elements that are unique to that area.

The songs are probably some of the catchiest tunes that i've ever heard from Disney and that is saying a lot. These songs are memorable, bouncy and sometimes emotionally deep. My three favorites are "Love is an open door", "Fixer Upper" and even though it's massively overplayed, I still really think "Let it go" is a great Disney song.

The movie does get a lot of backlash from other people because of it's popularity, but I think that there's more to this movie then what it seems. Sure, it's might not be the greatest in the Disney Revival era, but it still is a solid film and I will be proud to admit that i'll keep coming back to watch this movie every winter season.
