Review of Frontier(s) (2007) by Zachary G — 13 May 2008
First we get Inside.. now this.. let France rain blood..
*spoilers*.
First off.. Frontiere(s) is about a few friends who just take a nasty turn in the road and literally end up in the hands of neo-nazis.. i'll just end it there.. I didnt really think the nc-17 rating really lived up to the hype in gore/violence but I think it was nc-17 due to a sadistic actions. (ex. guy gets severely burned especially his face and he is still somewhat alive, about to die and one of the neo-nazis pulls out a gun and just shoots him, not overally blood at all but the act is beyond cruel)..there is probably one scene that lived up to an nc-17 moment.. buzz saw anyone?? I guess the french love their buzz saws. ala High Tension .. this isnt the bullshit that the texas chainsaw massacre remake was.. if france ever had a texas chainsaw massacre this would be it.. one of the best scenes in recent horror had to of been the dinner scene with the father and his explanation of why he was doing what he was doing to the main lead.. not scary but that scene was very creepy.. i'm just saying its one hell of rollercoaster ride and not to mention its beyond entertaining. I must add that the score was incredible for this movie.. it added much dread to what was happening.. anyways highly recommended..
I feel like the french has completely reinvented the horror genre.. yeah it might not be the most original horror movie but as far as intensity no american horror movie in recent memory has come close except for maybe the descent. the violence/gore with french films such as Frontiere(s), Inside, High Tension are made much more realistic and brutal..
Inside is still the much more strong film but Frontiere(s) isn't far behind as far as horror goes.
