Review of Frontier(s) (2007) by Erin K — 17 May 2008
Frontiers: I was really, really looking forward to this one. After High Tension and Inside I figured the banned film from Horrorfest would be a shoe in for best film yet...however I was wrong. It looked dirty and gritty and yes the violence, when it FINALLY happened was pretty rough but it still wasn't enough to save the film.
Perhaps if the twitchy, zombie-esc acting of the main character was less twitchy and zombie like and if any of the characters were actually likable, then I would say this film would pass as okay and enjoyable but they weren't and so the film isn't.
The entire time I felt like I was watching a mixture of TCM, Skinned Deep, The Descent, and Wolf Creek. Sadly, Frontiere(s) is no where near their caliber. The plot was lacking any originality and the pacing was terrible.
There were some redeeming moments of gore but those brief rays of sun were over shadowed by the fact the deaths were predictable and seen coming a mile away. And as for being banned THE ONLY reason it was banned, and therefore had so much controversy around it is because they beat the shit out of a female.
Let's face it, if it had been a male no one would have blinked an eye. Inside was more violent then Frontiere(s) is but because we didn't hit the pregnant chick in Inside it's fine but because the main chick in Frontiere(s) is beaten everyone has a cow.
Basically this film was delivered with promises of gore and violence so bad it was banned from a HORROR MOVIE FESTIVAL but it was returned with annoyance that I can't have my two hours back.
