Review of From Here to Eternity (1953) by Dylan D — 22 Sep 2013
The image that graces the poster is actually a fitting portrait for a movie that deals in tragedy but without losing its sense of inspiration and laughs. Montgomery is subtle and moving in his portrayal but I had forgotten just how present Lancaster is.
He is not only commanding but very wounded in this movie. Kerr is very good as well and I don't think there's a movie where I didn't like Donna Reed no matter her character. The other surprise is Sinatra.
For anyone who hasn't seen this, Sinatra will capture you every time he's on screen and it's not his voice that's doing any of the capturing. A war film that deserved its wins and to this day is a fine look at a specific moment in time and place and the people who had their own lives until that fateful day.
