Definitely a genre bender. Johnny Depp carries this film and he does a fine job, but the script is somewhat cluttered. Having read the original graphic novel, I think that the movie was trying to fit too many hints to the book that kind of muddies up the universe of the movie.
While I do like the film, I was not as intrigued as I was with the book. Not comparing the two, but I think the movie can still stand on it's own and is a great thriller, but I'd say if you really want to have a gut wrenching experience, check out the original graphic novel.
I'd have to give this one a solid RENTAL.
