Review of From Hell (2001) by Bill M — 13 Feb 2013
Terrible in so many ways. It rapes the graphic novel in order to make a simple Hollywood whodunit that has a pointless imaginary relationship between the two leads (all of which is absent from the graphic novel, whose intent was to examine the psychology and mindset necessary to be Jack the Ripper).
The directing that is on par with a 5 year old, because at certain points I found myself saying, "I can think of 10 different ways to shoot this that would be infinitely more effective." I felt like I was watching a comedy at points.
No atmosphere, tension, suspense, drama, sense of urgency, or a point. Finally, it's really hard to make Johnny Depp boring, but this script manages to pull it off. All of the charisma in the world can't save a movie from stupid stupid writing.
