Review of From Hell (2001) by Philip Z — 11 Oct 2013
I find it hard to argue with the critical consensus of this film. It's visually dazzling with sumptuous art direction and photography, a color palette that suits the story and characters, but beyond being an exercise in style, there isn't a lot more of interest.
The only true fun I got from seeing From Hell was in playing my favorite movie-watching game - spot the character actors and representative film franchises. This is a film that combines Jack Sparrow, Hagrid, and Bilbo Baggins - in a strange way, the casting for this film foretells the emergence of the franchise movement that would seize our current film industry.
