Review of Fright Night (2011) by Davey M — 31 Oct 2012
An entertaining, sometimes funny, sometimes scary vampire flick with Colin Farrell (an actor who's often far better than the material he's given) obviously eating up his role as the seductive, salivating bloodsucker (and he's supported by a solid, charming, talented cast, with Yelchin, Poots, Collette, and Tennant rounding things out).
Craig Gillespie shows a deft hand with the comedy (though there's no saving a few of the jokes and he knows it) and he handles some of the more suspenseful sequences quite capably, if not with much style.
All in all, it's a good time--nothing approaching a reinvention of the genre and nowhere near the brilliant rollercoaster ride of something like "Drag Me to Hell" (a recent example of the horror-comedy done to perfection), but a genuinely entertaining popcorn movie, which seems to be an increasingly endangered species.
