Review of Friends with Kids (2012) by Kathryn S — 28 Aug 2012
While the conclusion feels a little contrived and tacked on, overall this is an enjoyable little movie. It's listed as a comedy, but it's not the laugh out loud variety, and the jokes aren't the over the top slapstick you'll find in many other titles starring these familiar actors.
It's plays up the drama more than the comedy and gives us an authentic and endearing view of the American urban upper-middle class family, made up of older 30 and 40 something apartment dwellers, juggling work, children, and still trying to maintain the chic city lifestyle which pre-children was clearly an essential part of these characters' identities.
It's not breaking new ground, but the acting is good (even a small supporting roll by Megan Fox doesn't detract) and the story is concise and hits all the points without wandering off track anywhere.
It drops off a bit in the last ten minutes, and the last couple lines are groan inducing, but it's probably worth your time on a date night. As far as rom-com's go it's head and shoulders above whatever godawful Miley Cyrus vehicle is probably on the Blockbuster shelf next to it.
