Review of Friendly Persuasion (1956) by Leigh R — 20 Jan 2008
I thought that this movie was very charming, and I enjoyed the 50-esque feel of it all, the husband-wife squabbles, the children doing the chores on the farm, the extremely very well-off family with only one person to help, and the random and somehow weekly road races.
And yet, after, I was told that the representation of the Quakers was very Hollywood-ized. They didn't deal with the Civil War very well at all. But then, who deals with war well at all??? I have never lived in a war zone and I hope never to.
How would I be able to live up to my ideals during a chaotic time like that/this? It does raise an interesting question.
