Review of Friday the 13th Part VII - The New Blood (1988) by Thomas H — 25 Feb 2010
This could have gone down as the most brutal Friday the 13th film, instead, the MPAA and a rushed schedule left it being a mediocre installment. Paramount hired John Carl Buechler to direct, based on this effects work background. He created the ultimate looking Jason, and came up with some terrific death sequences.
Unfortunately, the MPAA was particularly vengeful at this time, and nearly all the gore was cut. If it weren't for a couple of shots of nudity, this film could probably pass for PG-13. I've seen the raw, uncut footage of some of these scenes, and they would have made for such a better experience. The schedule for this movie was insane. It was green lit to shoot in January of 1988, and it was in theaters on May 13, 1988. This movie went from script to screen in four months! That's insane. The film has its moments, but also has some missed opportunities. Still, I always have fun watching it. And it has one of the best explosions ever.
*Again, rating is curved based on Friday the 13th and not film as a whole.
