Review of Friday (1995) by Mike G — 16 Apr 2010
Still funny and not so stupid as to be considered the atypical "bullshit comedy" so prevalent throughout the 90's and 00's. The characters, although highly exaggerated at times, actually have a hint of authenticity to them and you can tell that all involved cared about the project enough to try and "keep it real.
" Chris Tucker's Smokey is a finely played role and I just love the little nuances that Tucker throws into it; he's often hilarious. His reaction when he finds out there's no sugar for the Kool-Aid floors me every time.
Ice Cube's Craig as well seems like your average hapless good guy and together you can readily believe that these two have known each other forever. Not much happens that wouldn't ordinarily happen over a really crazy Friday in South Central and some of the bits are comic gold.
It's like the flip-side of Boyz in the Hood.
