Review of Frida (2002) by Brian S — 14 Sep 2010
Intriguing as this film was in places, I can't help but feel that it was lacking a certain something. with films like this I expect a character study--who was Frida Kahlo as a person that helped shape and influence her art? despite some great acting performances, there really wasn't much character development.
I felt as if this was a story and a collection of art with which I was already supposed to be familiar, and Julie Taymor was simply giving me an emotional summary with her own artistic interpretation and flare.
that being said, I think this is less a biopic about Frida Kahlo and more of a Julie Taymor art film that conveniently uses Frida's life story to give it some grounding and convention. the film is entertaining and the visual style is very colorful and unique, but there are levels of pretension and sub-par writing I just can't overcome.
