Review of Frida (2002) by Javier A — 07 Oct 2010
Visually appealing, but lacking more depth, this movie is still worth a viewing.
The acting was decent. Salma Hayek, played a decent Frida, but failed to properly convey the anguish which the character was experiencing. Alfred Molina was excellent, he made Diego Rivera jump out of the screen, a larger than life bastard. And Geoffrey Rush was an excellent Trotsky, very cerebral in the limited amount of time his character was on the film. The rest of the cast, with their big name appeal provided good acting.
The direction was good, but not great. The movie felt like a Frida Khalo print, instead of being a Frida Khalo original. Visually appealing, but the dynamics which this story presented were never fully developed. This leaves the audience with good eye candy, but not enough substance.
Overall, the movie is decent and a good watch, but it fails to live to its expectation. Most casual movie goers will enjoy this film, but hardcore Frida fans and cinephiles will be left wanting.
