Review of Frenzy (2015) by Matt K — 18 Oct 2008
This is a good Hitchcock movie, a very good one at points but there is no hiding that this is one of the most dispicable movies I have seen. Not a single male character is likeable, each exist at varying levels of depravity and all of the women end up abused.
Sometimes I enjoy movies where there are bad characters and things get worse, but there was no fun to be had here. Hitchcock has shown some form of myisogyny in all of his films, but he over indulges here to the point that we wonder if we care that anyone comes out alright.
Still, this movie did affect me, Rusk repeatedly saying "lovely" as he rapes a woman is unnerving. And that tracking where the camera just backs out of the apartment building is effective without showing anything.
Yet we still somehow wait for a scream or something, but the lack of that makes it all the more sad and terrifying.
