Review of French Kiss (1995) by Gareth R — 14 Apr 2008
Although the two leads are excellent, French Kiss isn't the most well-put-together film. The numerous plots are all cliched - the attempt to win back the ex with the new acquaintance, with whom she falls in love in the process; the stolen item that ends up in the wrong person's luggage; the thief who just wants to lead an honest life; the uptight American who learns to live well in a simple European idyll - but the winning performances and funny dialogue pull it through.
It's probably Kevin Kline's show, shining as a suave French thief, but Jean Reno is also excellent as his friend and sort-of nemesis. I'm not really fond of Meg Ryan, but that's in general, and she suits the role.
In a nutshell, it's obvious where French Kiss is going and it takes too long to get there, outstaying its welcome slightly by the end. The way there, however, is a lot of fun and definitely worth it.
