Review of Freeheld (2015) by Kyle B — 02 Oct 2015
This is a tough movie to review. It is an interesting and moving story with great performances all around but it seemed to be a little too by the books in terms of activism movies. The couple falls in love, one of them becomes ill, they find out something that they want on her death bed can't happen, people rally to make it happen, and then in the end *SPOILER ALERT* it does.
It was just very formulaic but Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, Michael Shannon, Josh Charles, and Steve Carell make it work for the most part even if there were moments where I knew what the next plot point would most likely be.
It's based off an Oscar winning short film that I have not seen but probably works better than a narrative version. To most audiences like the one I saw it with, they'll be over the moon for it because our heroes prevail and everyone is happy in the end (for the most part) but it was a little too clean.
I may sound negative about this movie but I liked it enough to recommend it but not a priority viewing in a movie theater. I was distracted due to a heckler the whole movie so that also has damaged my true overall thought on this movie because I was annoyed for the most of the movie so if I ever get to see it again on DVD maybe I'll think different but for right now I say 4 stars and it's worth seeing but you probably will know what to expect at every corner.
