Review of Freedom Writers (2007) by Just S — 09 Jul 2010
I actually fairly liked this movie. I was just expecting a formulaic and chiche high school drama, but this MTV film happened to have a lot more. The racial drama between the kids was really understandable and deep.
It's something that the film couldn't go on without. Also, the cast of teenagers are surprisingly terrific for their age. I would've expected some half-ass efforts, but they really went all out on this film.
Hilary Swank does a fantastic job in the leading role alongside her douchebag boyfriend played by Patrick Dempsey. The pacing in the film is also great with a non-formulaic screenplay. Although the film did drag in a couple scenes and it was sometimes a little it melodramatic, this is a great film.
Overall, I give Freedom Writers a 4 out of 5 (****).
