It does seem corny, but it's extremely entertaining and well worth the watch. There are some awkward errors like how the white teachers have literally no faith in the African students, but I really don't mind.
This is mediocre writing mixed in with exceptional filmmaking and a cool soundrack. Once you start watching, I promise you, you won't be able to stop.
