Review of Freedom Writers (2007) by Amanda V — 29 May 2012
If you think this is your average movie about turning a school's most baddest kids into something, then you are wrong! It's way deeper than that.
These kids are the way they are because of the traumatic childhoods that they have faced.
Hilary Swank does a fantastic job in trying to teach these kids that they are worth something and can achieve alot, even if the rest of society thinks otherwise. She also taught them that there is more to life than gangs and she was able to get the kids, who are from different ethnic groups, to actually socialise and communicate with eachother. For kids that hate eachother just because of their different races and gangs, I'd say that's an incredible feat.
Hilary plays a determined teacher that goes out of her way to ensure these kids get the education that they deserve.
This movie also addresses the events of the holocaust, which may have hit home for some viewers. This part of the movie and the kids having bad childhoods are 2 reasons that set this movie apart from all the rest.
Patrick Dempsey was lame as Hilary's love interest, that stupid selfish prick.
And the standout performance came from April Hernandez.
