Amazing to me that this film has relatively low critic ratings. Outstanding portrayals. Unusual and engaging storyline. History brought to life. Keen insights into psyche of slaves and confederate troops who suffer greatly and yearn for their freedom.

Lovable and admirable characters and easy and fun-to-hate villians. Political elements may be controversial ( I.e. KKK was a Democratic Party appendage), but hey, it's history. We thoroughly enjoyed the movie and recommend it!
