Review of Free State of Jones (2016) by Richard S — 30 Jul 2018
Matthew McConaughey plays a former farmer and now soldier fighting in the American Civil War who makes the decision to leave the fighting he never believed in and return home to run his farm. Here he finds Confederate soldiers regularly taking what they need from his farm and his neighbours by any means necessary. This leads to him forming a rebellion against the Confederacy and becoming somewhat of a Robin Hood type figure as he, fellow soldiers and slaves declare themselves free men in their own county and begin to fight back against those who would take what they want.
I found this quite an interesting story and didn't know it is actually based on true events. There are also jumps in time to see what future consequences of his actions had some 80 years later. The war doesn't hold back on the brutality so there are some gruesome bits to the story but overall I found it a pretty good movie.
