Free state of Jones tells the brutal and perhaps dull story of a time of injustice before and after the war to end slavery. It's greatest virtue is that it does not try to glorify it's hero or their cause to a superhuman proportion. The struggle can be seen in all realms of each and every character. However, this does reduce some of the entertainment value of the film. Mathew McConaughey as always gives a credible performance.
