Review of Free Solo (2018) by Bryce F — 11 Dec 2018
An amazing feat to be sure and lots of interesting story telling angles - the physicality, the morality of filming such an an act, the idea that filming itself might detract from the purity of the climb, or alter its outcome- as well as looking at the upbringing that made honnold what he is, and the relationships he has now. The film never felt particularly cohesive though, it touched on ideas but never seemes to really link them.
The movie is at its most compelling during the actual free solo; shot almost like a nature documentary. But some elements of overt 'story telling' detract. Honnolds girlfriend being made out like the budding Yoko Ono of free soloing for example.
Not to say free solo isnt full of wonderful imagery, but better told stories of climbing exist.
