Review of Free Fire (2017) by Daniel S — 09 Dec 2018
Gunfights are so ubiquitous in film that to see one portrayed in a different way is incredibly refreshing. And when that different way is 'realistically' it brings even more of a smile to the face.
Watching this film, essentially a single drawn out gunfight, makes one realise how many assumptions we make with normal shoot outs in movies. The main characters don't miss. People shrug off wounds until they need to be tended to after the fight.
Bullets are plentiful. All of these myths are shattered in this film, to great effect. However, a film that is set in one room either has to be very talky and exposition filled, or feature flashbacks, in order to create a story to invest in.
This does neither. So as entertaining as it is watching people struggle with the real mechanics of a gun-filled confrontation (and it is entertaining) without a story or strong characters to latch onto, this is just a series of things happening to people in front of you.
