Review of Freddy vs. Jason (2003) by Jakeyjake — 27 Apr 2020
4/10 It was decent at times, fun at some parts but overall it was a pretty disposable horror movie with typical cliches and horror tropes. Tropes and cliches that have not only been duplicated by earlier films slasher movies of the 80s and 90s, but also parodied, like in "Scream" from 1996.
First off, I really liked the premise of Freddy reviving Jason, in an effort to go to Elm Street in order to cause havoc, which could in turn make the people of Elm Street fear Freddy again. I thought that was a unique way to bring these two icons together and clash on screen. However, where this movie ultimately falters is the rest of the main cast is so incredibly dull, uninteresting and unlike-able, that at times this movie becomes almost unwatchable. I understand slasher films feature these disposable characters in order to rack up the body count, but when those boring characters take up 70% of screen time in a 90 minute movie, it makes it hard to sit through. Aside from some pretty entertaining kills, and an epic battle scene between Freddy and Jason, this movie is at best: a "guilty pleasure" type of movie. Nothing more.
