Review of Freaks (1932) by Ben W — 24 Jun 2010
Decent little movie from the early days of talkies. and surprisingly dark for its day as well (one scene in particular with all the "freaks" crawling under wagons after one of the antagonists in torrential downpour).
certainly showing the influence of the likes of fritz lang, the cabinet of dr. caligari, and other german expressionist pieces, the plot has a significant inevitability to it. though by todays standards it might seem exploitative of the side show performers the fact that there is any amount of a human story attached to these characters is quite a feat for the day.
