Review of Freaks (1932) by Gary H — 21 Jun 2011
Perpetually sad and celebratory. A triumph of life in the face of cruelty and intolerance. Tod Browning's film is one that could not have been made had it not been when it was. Freaks is not a horror film really, for Browning's "monsters" are developed and sensitively drawn [although at times, heavy-handedly so] in ways not even Karloff's Frankenstein monster was.
It's a rather beautiful motion picture, one to be cherished and remembered; one that should still be watched today.. frequently, and through all generations of viewers.
