Review of Freaks (1932) by Juan B — 29 May 2010
I have to start by saying that I am absolutely blown away by this movie. "Freaks" starts with the premise of a bunch of different people who works at the circus and they have one slogan, one motto of life "offend one of us and you'll offend all of us". Reading about this movie, I was specially moved by the fact that this movie has been banned for a long time in many countries, and that people even screamed when they saw these people on screen saying that it was one of the most disturbing experiences.
I did find the movie especially disturbing, but at the end of it, when the movie turned into a horror movie with all "the freaks" trying to murder "the offenders" of the movie. But during the 60 minutes I could not feel but admiration for all of them, showing acceptation for themselves even when the people and society were so cruel to them.
My favorite character of the movie was the one portrayed by Johnny Eck, who, without a doubt, achieves to transmit sweetness and elegance despite his condition. And I find particularly funny (though emotional in another way) the scenes with the twins Violet and Daisy Hilton... And of course, I cannot end the review of this movie without mentioning the work of Harry and Daisy Earles for portraying with so much emotion and for making me live with so much intensity the scenes with Hans and Frieda.
A classic and a masterpiece that makes you a better person and it makes you think about a lot of things, if there are people who laughs of the characters, and not with the characters, the one which laughs is the one who might consider if he has a problem.
