Review of Freaks (1932) by Ryan T — 30 Oct 2010
"Gooble gobble, gooble gobble! We accept her, we accept her! Gooble gobble, gooble gobble! One of us, one of us!".
Freaks tells the story of a circus trapeze artist that agrees to marry a German "little person" named Hans but only because she has discovered that he is the heir to a fortune all the while planning to bump off her new husband. She begins poisoning him but the others find out about her scheme. In the final scene the "freaks" get pay back on the evil "normal" people.
While the film isn't necessarily a horror film in the classic sense and is more of a melodrama, it certainly becomes a horror film during the final scene. And what a scene it is. The "freaks" chasing her around is something that needs to be viewed to understand the power of it. Tod Browning shoots his mostly non-professional actors in a very sympathetic fashion that is hard to really feel for them. It is a thing of beauty to behold. And yet it is also a terror to behold when the "freaks" are chasing the trapeze artist in the rain. Really great film. Great mix of poignancy, humor and horror. A must-see movie. 10/10.
