Review of Frantic (1988) by Gary G — 29 Jun 2009
This is pretty good and just barely slides past my minimum standard for a recommendation. Harrison Ford, love him or hate him, really carries a movie. Since this movie is as old as my car, 1988, it is showing a little aging, also like my car.
The acting was good, the Paris scenes were wonderful, and the plot was interesting enough.
I had a real problem with the ending that almost torpedoed my opinion of this but did not. Various bad guys and French authorities are looking for a nuclear switch that Ford is holding to trade for his wife. When he gets his wife the French authorities are approaching him and he throws it in the river in anger. Ford and his wife walk away and the French agents shake their heads in defeat. During the movie you were led to believe that the entire world's stability depended on this thing. Nobody attempts to get it? Ford isn't at least scolded? I sighed out loud as this played out.
Emmanuelle Seigner is quite a find as well. I would look for her today in other movies but just realized she is now 20 years older! Oh well.
