Review of Frank (2014) by Kathleen W — 12 Jan 2016
This movie was pretty awesome. I think the creative process does serve as sort of a universal enigma for everyone out there trying to pursue a creative field or art and this film does a really good job of exploring the realms of creative possibility and also the spin and surprising entrance of a savant and how hard being around someone that naturally picks up on energy around them and channels it into whatever they want.
the relationships really make up the focal points of the film, in particular between John and Frank and how they build each other up so far before everything falls apart. I also really enjoyed the whimsy combined with the really flat and desaturated cinematography; that juxtaposition really centered the film, gave it its tone, and exaggerated the off-the-wall personalities in the band SORONPRFBS.
Great performances from Michael Fassbender and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Domnhall Gleason was also great (just took some getting used to his character). the soundtack is also quite DOPE; just real quirky synth-driven alt pop.
the qualms I do have mostly stem from the last third of the film and how the tone dies down nearing the end; it just didn't quite carry through quite the way the set-up and building action did for me.
either way, it's on Netflix, you might as well watch it! It's good!
