Review of Frances Ha (2013) by Matt D — 02 Dec 2013
My feelings on this film are actually pretty torn. On one hand I loved the journey of seeing Frances move from obnoxious louse to successful 20-something, but at the same time I wanted to slap her every step of the way.
Maybe it was because her bad traits reminded me of one of my best girlfriends and how much I want her to overcome them for her own benefit, but for all of the realism on display here I thought the conclusion ended up being a bit too easy. Its heartwarming and nice but I'm not sure I bought it 100%.
Questionable/rushed endings aside director Noah Baumbach delivers a fun and realistic depiction of aging youth like I've never seen before. Great music and performances populate the brisk film from start to finish. In short, its a hidden gem that delivers a little more attention.
