Review of Frances Ha (2013) by Jennifer H — 29 May 2013
One word: LOVE! Snippets of this reminded me of Woody Allen's Manhattan. For obvious reasons, it's filmed in B&W and in Manhattan. But Gerwig made this her own. I loved the juxtaposition of black & white film with modern day NY. It made it feel nostalgic and made you long for a NY of yesteryear, while at the same time focusing on a newness of a 27 year old girl in present day Manhattan.
The film was easy to relate to for a woman. We've all spent endless days/nights doing nothing and everything with a close friend. Wanting to encapsulate that moment and live in it forever, only to discover that nothing ever stays the same. People change and in doing so, relationships change and evolve too. Gerwig is so damn charming and endearing. I just wanted to hug her and help her find her way.
My favorite scene in the movie was of Frances running through the city, carefree, to David Bowie's "Modern Love". Love!
