Review of Frances Ha (2013) by J.m. M — 15 Jun 2013
After seeing Frances Ha, I am amazed and baffled by the reviews it got. This was one of the most shallow, meaningless, boring movies I've seen. There was, in my opinion, no character development (of any of the characters), no plot, and no detectable concept behind the whole thing. Ultimately, I had no interest in or connection with any of the characters. Whether Frances ended up dancing or working as a janitor in the studio made no difference to me. She didn't strike me as witty, charming, amusing, zippy or goofy.
Additionally, the use of black and white seemed gratuitous and uninspired. And as far as being "about NY" - it barely seemed to be a backdrop. There was nothing reflecting its character as a city and the role that it plays in the lives of its inhabitants. I think the movie would have made more sense titled "Frances WTF?".
