Review of Frances Ha (2013) by Peter C — 29 Jul 2013
A whimsical, dipsy dancer who doesn't dance.
Skint. Undateable. Between jobs. Going nowhere - fast.
"I'm so embarrassed I'm not a real person yet.".
Her rock: her best friend Sophie.
They eat together, drink together and sometimes sleep together.
"We're like a lesbian couple who don't have sex.".
Life moves on, Sophie moves on, but Frances doesn't and can't.
She stumbles from job to job, and boyfriend to boyfriend, aimlessly.
"Boys are easier. Girls are passive aggressive, boys are like 'clean up your shit'.".
The bank of mum and dad runs out. She can't pay her rent.
She moves into student dorms. Not teaching, not studying - chaperoning.
She is, as Celine Dion sung, "All By Myself".
After much soul searching, slowly, over time, she gets a grip.
She gets a job. She gets a flat. She gets a little older and wiser.
Not a lot, but just a little. Enough.
As Jagger put it: "You can't always get what you want.
But if you try sometimes, you just might find,.
You get what you need." (-ish).
